Hot Tub Maintenance: Keeping Your Hot Tub Safe as Temperatures Drop

Using your hot tub in winter weather can feel great, but make sure you’re doing it safely!

It finally feels like winter. Cold weather is changing our daily habits, as it does every year, and that means a lot less outdoor activities. Pools are out of the question at this point, but what about hot tubs? Thanks to their comforting warmth, the outdoor temperature doesn’t matter much. But while the prospect of soaking in warm water while everything around you is frigid can be enticing, foregoing hot tub maintenance can be a dangerous decision.

Last month, we talked about hot tub maintenance through a lens of upkeep. Now, we’re going to examine it through a safety lens. What can you do to make sure your relaxing soaks post no danger?

Let’s talk hot tub safety!

Check Entrance & Surrounding Surfaces for Slip and Fall Potential

Walk, do not run, to your hot tub and make sure there are no slipping hazards. Icy weather especially can increase the chances of slipping while entering or exiting your hot tub.

Place some non-slip mats around the hot tub entrance, and be sure to clear leaves and other debris from the area. While you’re at it, keep your towels and robes within easy reach to minimize time spent in the cold and distance you need to travel to reach them.

Monitor Water Temperature & Equipment Performance

We know your hot tub is supposed to be hot (it’s in the name, after all), but you should still check the temperature before getting in. When temperatures are particularly cold, your equipment needs to work harder to maintain that warmth, so regular checks are strongly recommended.

A few tips:

  • Set your water temperature between 100 and 104 degrees for ideal comfort and safety. This is a tip straight from the CDC!
  • Schedule seasonal hot tub maintenance to ensure everything is in working order (we’re happy to provide these services to ensure hot tub safety).
  • Make sure your jets and filters are functioning properly.
  • Ensure your hot tub cover is adequately insulating your hot tub.

Maintain Proper Water Level, Circulation & Chemical Balance

When the weather is cooler, it can have an effect on your hot tub’s water level, circulation, and even its chemistry. Here’s a quick checklist of things to keep an eye on before you take a dip.

  • ✅Keep the water level above the skimmer and jets. This ensures the pump doesn’t run dry.
  • ✅Run frequent circulation cycles as the temperatures outside creep lower.
  • ✅Balance the chemicals (sanitizer, pH, and alkalinity) before you start heavily using your hot tub in winter.

Healthy water and equipment means a safer, more comfortable experience.

Inspect, Secure & Insulate Covers and Plumbing

Your hot tub cover is more important than you think, as it does much more than keep sticks and leaves out of the water. That’s a great benefit in itself, but the cover also acts as an insulator. Without it, heat can escape and moisture and ice can even cause damage, a side effect many people don’t consider.

For maximum hot tub safety, it’s best to check the seams and fasteners on your cover for damage or sagging. You want it to fit snugly! If you notice any snow or ice buildup, remove it promptly and lock the clamps securely when placing the cover.

The cover also insulates plumbing lines, pumps, and heaters, which is crucial for avoiding costly damage to the equipment. Without such insulation, these components could freeze.

Safe Usage Practices in Cooler Weather

Let’s take a detour from hot tub maintenance and discuss safety more directly. What precautions can you take when using the hot tub?

  • Limit your sessions to around 20 minutes to avoid overheating.
  • Make sure the entrance around the hot tub is clear of ice and any obstructions.
  • Have dry towels close and easily accessible.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid heavy alcohol usage while in the hot tub.
